Experience

My name is Jule (Yula), I am a native German teacher that has lived in the US for five years. I have been a teacher at a local language school for about a year now with additional experience in private tutoring for individuals looking to improve and maintain their German skills. I currently teach around 10 classes at the language school, that include a beginner's German class where we are working from the base up, starting with grammar, reading, listening and a little bit of writing; a beginner's conversation class where we talk about different topics every week in German, answer questions and work on pronunciation; a fluent children's group class where the emphasis is on German spelling and grammar for re-entry into the German school system; a private literary class where I work with my students on essays and stories by Kafka, experiencing and learning about German grammar and writing styles; and multiple private children's classes to maintain German conversation skills. Most of my German classes are based on what the student's goal is. Meaning, if you need to improve your German Grammar, grammar repeats and drills will be the main content of your class. If however you are seeking to learning the language and your goal is "conversation" we would focus on grammar only secondarily and mainly on how to properly converse. Mostly, I base my classes according to the Common European Framework of reference (CEFR) for German as a second language. This means that I use the Level Scheme of A1-C1. A typical new student-teacher relationship would start with me assessing the abilities of the new student, and placing them in the proper CEFR Level. ( There is a written and a verbal test that helps determine this.) Unless you have specific materials, I like to use the book series "Schritte International" . Having learned English as a Second Language helps me relate to the struggles and frustrations of my students while offering support and motivation to continue reaching one's language goals. Teaching in a group and private lesson setting has given me the experience needed to fine-tune the pace and style according to the different personalities and levels of expertise at hand. Because I was exposed and worked with a variety of personalities and professionals, both in Germany and here in the US, I am confident that my strong work ethic and people skills have pushed me to be a successful German teacher at any proficiency level.
