Hobbies

When I was in the eighth grade, we had to read this story for Advanced English, "A Rose for Emily" by William Faulkner, and write a one-page analysis of it. I was completely lost! But my dad was a Faulkner fan and took me through that story page by page, paragraph by paragraph. The teacher wound up singling me out as the only student who had understood the story in the entire class. That's been a guidepost for me ever since -- being able to break down tough concepts in English and writing and make them comprehensible to everyone, including myself! In journalism, I've had to write about topics such as gas pricing, subprime mortgages and using the Human Genome Project to understand why malaria strains are resistant to the immune system (please don't ask me to explain that one again). What I've found over and over is that by doing a close reading, really breaking down the information presented to you, you can understand everything from politics to those short stories in the New Yorker. You know they actually have endings? I'm as surprised as you are. Reading, writing, vocabulary -- the tools to understanding these things are in everyday life, and in learning how to understand these things, students build valuable skills for not only expressing themselves, but also adapting a similar approach to other fields of study.
